About Niranam Church

Niranam Church is one of the most ancient Churches in India and is believed to be established by St.Thomas the Apostle in AD 52.  The church comes under the Niranam Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and is known as St. Mary's Orthodox Valiapally. It has been venue for many major incidents in Malankara Church and serves as the Mother Parish for all the nearby parishes.
The present Church was constructed in 1912 and was reinforced in 2000 making some slight modifications. The eight day lent (ettu nombu) which falls between September 1 - 8 every year is the major festival of the Church. Apart from this the feast of St. Thomas and St. Behanan and the remembrance of Marthoma II and Marthoma V are other major events of the Church.

It was at Niranam Church in 1912, the Catholicate of the East was re-established and many other important events and meetings were conducted at this ancient Church. St. Gregorios of Parumala used to visit this Church frequently as he was in charge of Niranam Diocese also.
